Memphis In May - May 27 and 28, 2000
The Great Southern Food Festival:
The South Meets the Mouth
Sponsored by the mayors of
Memphis and Shelby County
Mayor W.W. Herenton
City of Memphis
Mayor Jim Rout
Shelby County
For the
first time in a decade, Memphis in May introduces a major public event to
Tom Lee Park…and it's an event that's got folks smackin' their lips!
What comes
to mind when you think of Southern food? Fried chicken, grits, gumbo,
pecan pie, catfish and hushpuppies, fried green tomatoes, turnip greens,
and chitterlings all lay claim to being below-the-Mason-Dixon delicacies.
And what do Southerners do when their mouths are waterin' for a slice of
the South? Throw a party!
The Great
Southern Food Festival celebrates the cuisine, culture and charm of the
South. The festival, the first of its kind, will marry the gracious
goodness of Southern food with the homemade hospitality of the region into
an event perfect for the family. Even Yankee families will find a reason
to cross into the land of cotton for the best new festival ever to grace
the Mississippi river. Ole Man River will widen into a jumbo smile for the
Great Southern Food Festival.
The
Sunset Symphony
Set on the
banks of the Mississippi River, this family oriented event is the grand
finale of our month-long celebration of Memphis and our 2000 honored
country of India.
Since the
very first Sunset Symphony, over 30,000 people annually have made this
event a tradition by gathering as a community to enjoy selections of
popular music, classical favorites and tributes to our honored country.
Sunset Symphony closes with a spectacular fireworks display.
Highlights
from past Sunset Syphonies include the arrival of the Olympic torch in
1996 and a visit from Vice President Al Gore. The Vice President joined
the Olympic Torch runner in lighting the Olympic cauldron in a fitting
finale to the year's festivities. Other highlights included performances
by former Tennessee State Governor Lamar Alexander on piano, Issac Hayes,
Charlie Rich, and the Beale Street Divas; Joyce Cobb, Wendy Moten &
Reba Russell.
